Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are a smart material which change in viscosity in response to magnetic fields, thus changing the stiffness of the material. SmartSeat uses this phenomenon to automate stiffness adjustments through the usage of electromagnets and MR fluids in the cushion.
The SmartSeat cushion uses 4 MR fluid pockets placed under critical anatomical points to create localized stiffness adjustments allowing for active and autonomous redistribution
